The days have felt long since my encounter with Azogg. The confession spilled from my lips before I could stop it. I never talk about my family. Not that I have anyone to tell but I don’t even speak to myself about it. It’s too devastating to relive being a 7-year-old girl watching her family being slaughtered.

I feel bile rising in my throat so I close my eyes. No, I must not think about the events of that night, only about what I am going to do to avenge them. The feeling of guilt has been washing over me in waves since I relived my worst nightmare. How could I be here enjoying food, warmth, and shelter while Elron and his men continue to terrorize my people? Maybe my thievery wasn’t much, but at least I was trying. I was fucking trying.

I am hit with a sharp cold blast as I throw off the furs. Today I am determined to get a Frostwolf. The idea was sparked in me while Naz and I visited Azed.

I can’t stay here forever and if they kill me for trying to escape? Well, at least I tried. If I do escape maybe I’ll track down the rebel group and fight with them. Dying and killing are not all that different, they’re both honorable when you are doing it for the ones you love.

I rush to put on my countless layers of clothes. Inside the mountain is cold yet tolerable but this morning I’ll be in the frigid temperatures this slab of rock has to offer outside. Naz mentioned that the creature has been stealing from the food reserves, which are kept just outside. I exit our cave—his cave—and head toward the access point behind the clan’s food shack.

There is not a soul on the trail that I have taken with Naz dozens of times. Not having access to the sun has really fucked up my perception of time but the lack of orc presence makes me realize that it’s early, really early.

That is for the best as Naz and Skar would try and stop me. I can’t help but wonder if this idea is completely stupid and dangerous? It sure is! However, when I succeed in taming this animal, I’ll not only secure the respect of the orcs around me but I will have a means of escape. Orc Mountain is less perilous with a Frostwolf escort. Nearing the corner I can feel the heat radiating from the food shack. I’ve never been out to the food reserve because Skar thought it was too dangerous for me, but I have seen her and others come and go from the access point time and time again. Just then, the shack comes into my view, the little wood shelter that makes me feel much more than I care to admit.

Focus, Snow, you need to find the exit. The rock wall that towers over the back of the food cellar makes it difficult to see the entrance.
